Jenifer Cole is the Executive Director of the Wisconsin Women’s Council, the state’s statutory commission on the status of women and girls.

Shawn Phetteplace is the Policy and Political Impact Director for the Main Street Alliance. 

Special guest in attendance: Tammie DeVooght Blaney, local External Affairs Specialist from the Governor’s office

  1. Q1:  I first heard of the “Elder Women Security Index” and the plight of older women about 10 years ago. Jenifer, what was the data telling us 10 years ago?
  2. Q2:  What does the data tell us about the situation today? How many women of retirement age are in poverty or can’t retire?
  3. Q3:  What factors have caused this economic security problem for women of retirement age? Why is there a higher percentage of older women in poverty compared to men? (Jenifer, this is the place where it will make sense for you to talk about the 3-legged stool.)
  4. Q4:  What about small business owners and their employees? If they don’t have access to the 3rd leg of the stool—workplace savings account—what happens to them?
  5. Q5:  What legislative remedies are being proposed to help this current situation either at the state or federal level, especially for those who don’t have access to workplace savings?
  6. Q6:  Social Security and Medicare are critical parts of that 3-legged stool. Many think those programs are underfunded and at risk—is that true? What can be done?

Excerpted from the award-winning documentary, Equal Means Equal, with new footage and commentary, Legalize Equality streamlines the critical information necessary to put in the hands of the uneducated or skeptical. Making the case for ERA in a concise and compelling manner, this DVD is sure to help raise awareness and galvanize momentum to finish the job once and for all.
