Debbie Peters with Community for Hope, and Cynthia Reffke with Prevent Suicide Fox Cities, will present on their organization's methods of suicide prevention.  Community for Hope and Prevent Suicide Fox Cities are both 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations, which together encompass Winnebago, Outagamie, and Calumet counties.

Prevent Suicide Fox Cities supports Outagamie and Calumet counties. We were founded 10 years ago as a direct response to the many suicides that took place in Kaukauna. We exist to eliminate suicide and its toll on survivors.

OUR VISION:

  • Reduce the stigma of mental illness through education and awareness.
  • Promote mental health.
  • Provide QPR gatekeeper training free to the community.
  • Offer support after suicide (SAS) loss groups for the general community and siblings.
  • Act as a resource to those seeking suicide prevention information and support.

We advocate for men who are at the highest risk of suicide both ages 19-65 and our elderly men, teens and survivors of suicide loss who are also at great risk.

As a survivor of suicide loss, Cynthia felt called to volunteer and get involved in suicide prevention.  She's a business owner by trade and felt her business and marketing skills would be helpful to the organization.  She works every day in memory of her brother-in-law who died too soon by suicide.  She has been with Prevent Suicide Fox Cities since 2013.  With a 10-member board of directors to govern the organization and she serves as the board chair and volunteers many hours to support the mission and vision.

Community for Hope was formed over 18 years ago, as a direct response to an alarming number of youth who died by suicide, over a short period of time. Since that time, we have expanded our mission’s reach to all ages.  As the only non-profit agency serving Winnebago County, with its sole mission of suicide prevention, intervention and grief support, we have continued to work diligently to address the epidemic of suicide in our area and reach out to those who have lost loved ones to suicide.

Debbie Peters has served as the Executive Director for Community for Hope since 2014.  We are governed by a 12-member Board of Directors.  We truly believe that suicide prevention is everyone’s business!

As a member of the Tri-County Zero Suicide Coalition, we are promoting QPR Gatekeeper Training.  Just as CPR can save lives, QPR does the same.  This evidence-based, best practice program teaches the following, within a two-hour course:

Q - How to ask the question, "Are you thinking about suicide?"

P - How to persuade that person to seek professional help.

R - Where to refer that person for the help they need and deserve!
